Home decor tips: The power of yellow

It's well known that yellow is the symbol of sun, light, warmth and joy. That's why it's the perfect colour to cheer up a place. Its fans would love to decorate the entire house with it, but if you're not such a big yellow-lover, you can use it just as an accent together with other colours, like white, violet, pink or turquoise. The effect will be the same: a sunnier home (even though the sun might not appear there too often).

According to a 2000 survey, there are not too many western people who love the yellow colour: only 6% of them consider it their favourite colour and for 7%, it was their least favourite. That's because yellow is not associated only with joy and optimism, but also with betrayal and jealousy. In Asia though, yellow is the colour of virtue and nobility.

Anyway, if you are living in a region where the sun doesn't shine too often and it rains a lot or if the windows of your house face the north and the rooms are quite dark, then it would be great to include yellow in your home decor. Just a tiny bit, as an accent, or maybe more, as the main colour... that's up to you.

If you want a maximum contrast and harmony, then you should use yellow together with violet, its complementary colour. They work great together!

One of the best tricks is to put yellow curtains at your windows... it will feel like the sun is constantly shining. For a harmonious decor, you can add some yellow and violet pillows on the sofa or on the bed and here you go.... you have a cheerful room!

A step further will be adding some yellow furniture or even maybe painting a wall in yellow. Here are a couple of nice ideas, maybe you will feel inspired.

Just a curtain...
