Infographic: What colours to use in each room of your house

Our colleagues from Distinctive Chesterfields created a very useful Infographic, which will help you decorate each room in your home according to the colour psychology. As you know from our article How to use colours in interior design - Part 3: The psychology of colours, colours have the power to influence our moods, therefore we have to choose them carefully when we decorate our houses.

However, it's important not to go to extremes. Too much of one colour in a room can become overwhelming. For example, red is perfect for the dining room, because it stimulates the appetite. On the other side, too much red might induce anger and aggression. Therefore, each colour should be used moderately.

Our advice: take a colour according to the Infographic and make it the main one in the room. For example, you want to decorate your living room using mainly brown. Take a brown sofa, a brown carpet and just a couple of brown pieces of furniture. But paint the walls in white or beige and bring some blue/green decorations, like pillows, vases, chairs or ottomans. Blue/green is the complementary colour for brown, so it will accentuate it. You also have the option of using different shades of brown, which will accentuate each other, like in the photo below. But never use the same shade in the whole room, because it will be visually monotonous.

Let us know if you decorated your home according to the Infographic or if you just used your favourite colours.
