The Christmas baubles are nowadays the most popular ornaments for the traditional Christmas tree. You can't even imagine a tree without the baubles, right? At the beginning of Christmas celebrations as we know them today, the trees were adorned with natural elements like apples, candies or pine cones, but since the invention of the glass baubles, the history of the Christmas decorations changed completely.

krebslauscha.de
The glass baubles were invented in the small town of Lauscha, in Germany, by Hans Greiner (1550-1609) and Christoph Müller. The little town, located in a river valley in the German state of Thuringen, had the necessary elements for glass-making: timber and sand. So, in 1597, Müller and Greiner opened the Glashütten ("glassworks") in Lauscha. First, they started producing garlands of glass beads and tin figures that could be hung on trees. The original Lauscha ornaments in shape of fruits and nuts soon grew into the production of artistic glass figures made by highly skilled artisans.

The baubles were so popular, that other glassblowers in Lauscha began producing them in a wide variety of designs and soon the whole of Germany started buying the Lauscha Christmas ornaments. Lauscha started exporting its products throughout Europe after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom decorated the Christmas tree with the glass baubles received from her German husband Prince Albert. In the 1880's, American F.W. Woolworth discovered the Lauscha baubles during a visit to Germany and started importing them to the United States.

Today, there are still 20 small glass-blowing firms in Lauscha that produce glass baubles. You can find at the end of this article a list with some of these. They might be a bit more expensive than the plastic or the big-scale production glass baubles, but they are worth it. The Lauscha baubles are a part of the history and of the Christmas traditions in Europe.

Christmas is my favourite holiday and I just can't imagine it without the wonderful decorated Christmas tree. But, in the same time, I know that this tradition isn't quite environmental friendly (which is a very important subject for me) and there's a little battle going on in my mind: should I give up the nicest Christmas tradition and do a good deed for the planet? Well, fortunately there is a great solution to this problem: use a Christmas tree in a pot!

blogarredamento.com
You can find tree in pots almost everywhere now, but remember to ask your supplier where the trees come from and choose a locally grown tree. The big advantage of the potted tree is that it allows you to grow it outside and use it again next year, reducing the environmental impact. If you can't take care of the potted tree until the next Christmas, then you can rent one from a specialized company. They will bring the tree in a pot at your home, then they will take it after the holidays and replant it at their tree farm until next Christmas. You can even buy it and use the same potted tree year by year.

Before getting to the decorating ideas, I have gathered here a few tips on caring for the potted Christmas tree.

  • To make sure the tree will last in the house for the holiday season, it would be best to display it in a cool room (when possible). If not, keep it away from the heaters and bring them indoors as late as possible - a few days before Christmas would be ideal.
  • Do not keep living tree in the house any longer than 10 days, but if it looks unhappy, put it back outside even sooner. Be sure it gets all the water it needs.
  • After Christmas, you can plant the tree in your garden or send it back to the tree nursery.
  • If you're using lights for decorating the living Christmas tree, make sure the light bulbs don't heat too much - LED lights would be better.
  • Use ornaments that are not too big, so you won't destroy the branches.

A perfect eco-friendly Christmas would mean a living Christmas tree decorated with eco-friendly ornaments - made of wood and other natural or recycled materials, and lighted with solar power. You can go completely eco or just stick to the living tree, it's your choice and it depends on the budget and time available. If you want to try it, here are some ideas:

  • You can buy or create ornaments made of natural materials, like organic cotton, silk, hemp, wood.
  • You can recycle various items and transform them in new ornaments.
  • Remember that less is more in decorating - do not overuse ornaments. Clutter does not look good.
  • Use energy-efficient LED lighting. The LED bulbs can save 90% on power costs and will last longer.
  • For the gifts, use sustainable wrapping paper or any other natural material.

The Christmas feast is one of the best moments of this wonderful holiday. Therefore, we also have to pay a little bit of attention to the way we decorate the table. It will certainly impress your guests!

It's important to match the table decorations with the ones in the Christmas tree and stick to the same decorating style. Do not clutter the table with too many ornaments or too many colors and try to keep it simple and elegant.

Here are some beautiful ideas for decorating your Christmas table. Enjoy!

Christmas is my favourite holiday of the year and I just can't wait to see the decorations in the shop's windows, the joyful lights on the streets and the enchanted Christmas markets. Yes, they look enchanted every year and I will never get enough of them. Right when November comes, I just get into the spirit of the holiday. The shops are already fully packed with Christmas decorations, so it's the best time to start thinking about this year's home decor.

The options are: the traditional Christmas decorations in white, red and green, or following the trends. If you want something special this year, then these are this year's Christmas trends, according to Florist's Review and to the trend experts at the trade fair Christmasworld 2016:

1. Woodland Winter - Northern Climes

The rustic Christmas look is one of the favourites for already a couple of years, but this season it adds some wilderness! The Woodland Winter is inspired by the cold winter forests or some would say, by the northern landscapes. If you want to achieve this look, try to incorporate the next elements:

- woodland animals, like owls, birds, bears, deer, foxes or squirrels
- white-barked tree branches, like birch and aspen
- snow-dusted evergreens, pine cones and holly
- red and green berries
- lanterns, vintage snowshoes, sleds, skis, skates, mittens and stocking hats
- wooden and frosted glass ornaments
- natural textiles, like raw linen, faux fur and faux leather
- patterns like rustic plaids and checks

The main colours for this theme are white, almond, brown, grey, green and red.

2. Merry Metals

The metallic trend is already here for some years and it seems it will continue this season, too. For Christmas 2016, gold and silver will shine together, while copper will pair with pink, red, black and white.

3. Luxe Lodge

Luxe Lodge is a mix between the coziness of the country chalets and luxury.  You can obtain this rustic glam look by using elements like:

- animal figurines or trophies reproductions
- acorns, pine cones and feathers
- ornaments made of crystal and frosted glass
- distressed-look woods and antique decor, rustically painted or color washed
- metal ornaments
- fine fabrics and textiles, like superfine wools, silk velvets, nubby satins, faux leathers and faux fur

Along the metallic colours like gold and silver, this theme also uses ivory, taupe, basil green, brown and burgundy.

4. Handcrafted Holiday

DIY projects are a huge trend this year, therefore homemade Christmas ornaments are another big theme for Christmas 2016. Everything is traditional here, from colours to symbols and prints. You should include in your hancrafted decorations:

- candy canes, gingerbread, santas, cookies etc.
- textile arts, like knitting, needlepoint, embroidery etc.
- traditional prints and patterns, like simple plaids, checks, stripes, dots
- hand lettering and word banners
- hand-strung garlands and paper bag luminarias
- rustic wood carvings
- chalkboard

The colours are traditional: red, white and green.

5. Holiday Home

This trend is inspired by popular interior palettes and it's based on blue hues. It is actually a trend based mainly on colours and not necessarily on elements. That's why you can use a great variety of elements, fabrics and patterns, all in whites, silvers, grays and blue shades - from turquoise to dark blues.

6. Neutral Noel

If you're searching for something elegant and you love neutral colours, then this is the write theme for you. It's also a theme based on a colour palette, therefore you can use a variety of decors. The important thing is to stick to the right colour palette: white, ivory, champagne silver, pale gold and platinum.

7. Jolly Jubilance

It's the most playful theme of them all, this Christmas. It is also based on colours, but this time on bright and vibrant ones. It makes you think about the pop art and it contains some kitsch elements, which add a bit of fun.

You can use any colours as you like, as long as they are bright: intense turquoise, cerise, canary yellow, tangerine, raspberry or purple.

If you like having a different Christmas tree every year, in 2013 you can enjoy a beautiful mix of traditional and modern colors and styles.

These are the 2013 Christmas trends:

1. Vintage

This year, we love the Vintage Luxe style. It's feminine, brightful and so romantic! Think about the old glass baubles, but in silver and gold. This style remembers us about the Victorian age, in pastel colors like pink, blue or turquoise. You can buy an artificial silver or golden tree and decorate it with pastel accesories.

2. Woodland

The nature lovers can enjoy this year a wonderful theme: the woodland. You can see it even in the most beautiful Christmas commercial this year, the John Lewis ad. You can use all the accessories that represent the forest: pine cones, deers, squirrels, foxes, owls, bird or berries.

3. Nordic / Scandinavian

This style come from the Scandinavian countries - Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway. You can use wooden decorations painted in white and red, with traditional motifs.

4. Monochrome

Black is not the perfect color for the Christmas, but it's a good choice for the ones who love minimalism. Black decorations can be paired with white, gold and silver, to offer a bit of sparkle. You can use a faux black or white Christmas tree, with accesories in geometric shapes, decorated with stars and crosses.

5. Traditional

The traditional style is always in the trends. Nothing is more beautiful than the green Christmas tree, with red and golden decorations.
